Azadi Tower

It has been the landmark of Tehran city since the time it was built; a place for celebration and revolution. Azadi Tower is the glorious symbol of Iran’s capital city. It is a part of Azadi Cultural Complex, located in Azadi Square at the west entrance of Tehran.

History of Azadi Tower

The building process of Azadi tower (or: Borj-e Azadi) which is probably the most famous monument in Tehran was finished in 1971. In 1966, Hossein Amanat, a 24-year-old architecture student, won a competition held for designing the tower and the project was started. Both pre-Islamic and post-Islamic architectural features can be seen in the 165ft tall building. 8000 blocks of white marble with geometrical patterns cover the skeleton of the tower. The tower which was formerly called Shahyad Tower was built to commemorate the 2500th Anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire. After the Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979, the name of the tower was changed into Borj-e Azadi which means the Tower of Freedom. These days, the annual celebration of Bahman 22nd is held at this site.

Milad Tower

This tower is the sixth tallest tower in the world. Including 120 m of an antenna, Milad tower is 435 meters high. Located between Qarb Town and Gisha District, Milad Tower (Borj-e Milad) stands as the modern symbol of Tehran and since Tehran is the capital of Iran, this tower is sometimes considered as the modern visual icon of Iran. Some believe that the designing project of the tower was commenced in the 1970s; however, the building process was started in 1997. Finally, it was officially opened in 2008.
